How We Work

Structured. Evidence-Based. Uncompromising.

Most therapy is supportive. Ours is targeted. We start every plan with a precise clinical formulation — identifying exactly what's maintaining your symptoms — then use the specific, evidence-based treatment proven to work for it. Active, structured, and focused on measurable change, not open-ended talk.

Formulation-Driven

Every treatment plan starts with a precise clinical formulation — no generic approaches, no guesswork.

Evidence-Based Only

We use treatments that have been rigorously tested and proven effective — nothing else.

Flexible Intensity

From weekly outpatient to intensive formats — multiple appointments across a week or several hours concentrated in a single day, depending on what fits your situation.

The treatments we use — and when we use them:

Children & Adolescents

Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa in young patients — the gold-standard approach for adolescents.

Adolescents & Adults

Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder — targets the maintaining mechanisms of eating disorder psychopathology.

All ages

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder — addresses sensory sensitivity, fear of aversive consequences, and low appetite.

Young children

A playful, exposure-based ARFID treatment developed at the Duke Center for Eating Disorders — body sensations become clues to investigate rather than dangers to avoid.

OCD · All ages

The first-line, gold-standard treatment for OCD. We face the fear and drop the rituals, gradually, until the obsession loses its power. Our emphasis: rigorous response prevention — including the mental compulsions (rumination, reviewing, self-reassurance).

Anxiety · All ages

The most effective treatment for anxiety disorders. We face avoided situations and drop the safety behaviors, gradually, until the fear loses its grip.

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)
Childhood anxiety & OCD

A parent-based treatment for childhood anxiety and OCD — it works by changing how parents respond, so a child can improve even when they aren't yet willing to engage themselves. Your child does not have to be willing for treatment to begin.

Adults

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder — reduces avoidance of trauma-related memories and situations through structured, graduated exposure.

Adults

PTSD — targets unhelpful beliefs about safety, trust, power, esteem, and intimacy that develop after trauma.

Adolescents & Adults

Emotion dysregulation, self-harm, and borderline personality features — builds skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Includes MED-DBT for treatment-resistant eating disorders with emotion dysregulation.

Adolescents & Adults

Disorders of overcontrol — a temperamental style of excessive self-restraint, rigid perfectionism, and inhibited emotional expression. It targets the character traits underlying obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), restrictive anorexia, and chronic depression, rebuilding the openness, flexibility, and social connection that overcontrol crowds out.

Adults

For the gap between what a person logically knows and what they emotionally believe — the convictions, formed in childhood, that feel true no matter how often they're disproven. Schema Therapy uses experiential, emotive techniques such as imagery rescripting and chair work to reach the emotional level cognitive work alone can't — getting underneath the pattern to the core emotional needs it formed around, so relief is felt and lasting, not just understood.

Adults

Chronic and "treatment-resistant" depression — specifically designed for early-onset or persistent depressive disorder unresponsive to other treatments.

Parents & Children

Oppositional Defiant Disorder and behavioral challenges — trains parents in evidence-based strategies to reduce oppositional behavior.

Adolescents & Adults

Depression and low mood — rebuilds engagement with rewarding activity to break the withdrawal cycle that sustains depression.

Adolescents & Adults

Anxiety, depression, and chronic struggle — builds psychological flexibility and values-driven action instead of fighting difficult thoughts.

How We Approach Treatment
When Weekly Isn't Enough

Intensive Programs — Higher Levels of Care, Same Specialist Team.

Step-up care in both of our core specialties — so escalating treatment never means leaving your specialist team. Both are available in-home and in-vivo in South Florida, Houston, Denver, and Chicago — and as virtual intensives across 40+ PSYPACT states.

Eating Disorder Intensives

FBT, CBT-E, ERP, MED-DBT, and RO-DBT delivered in your home and out in the real world, where an eating disorder takes hold — what clinicians call in-vivo work — where recovery actually has to happen. Renourishment is guided by clinicians who know about hypermetabolism, and how to keep refeeding safe and effective.

OCD & Anxiety Intensives

Adherent exposure and response prevention — the gold-standard treatment for OCD and anxiety, done fully and done right. An intensive, real-world format lets patients do exactly what recovery asks of them — facing what they've avoided and dropping the rituals and safety behaviors — so they can learn what can only be learned by doing it: that the feared outcome doesn't come, and the fear can be faced.

What if I need help with both?

Then you've found the right practice — the overlap of eating disorders with OCD and anxiety is one of our deepest specialties. You won't be split between providers or told to treat one condition first while the other waits. One team treats the whole picture, in one integrated plan. For adolescents, that can include the FAM Model — Dr. Zach Appenzeller's treatment approach — typically delivered intensively, though available at outpatient dose too — which anchors treatment in FBT and integrates CBT-E, ERP, or DBT/RO-DBT alongside it as early as the patient's willingness and clinical picture allow — and whenever treatments compete for adherence, FBT wins. Who We Work With

Across Every Age and Stage.

The Evidence-Based Treatment Institute serves patients across the full age range — in person in Boca Raton, Houston, Chicago, and Denver, with in-person caregiver mentorship in Austin, and via telehealth in 40+ PSYPACT states, plus New York and Hawaii through individual licensure.

Young Children (4–11)

Anxiety, OCD, ARFID, and behavioral difficulties — often delivered through parents using SPACE, PMT, and CBT-AR.

Adolescents (12–17)

Eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, school refusal, and ODD — using FBT, ERP, and integrated treatment for co-occurring presentations.

Young Adults (18–25)

Eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, PTSD, and the complexity of early-adult developmental transitions.

Adults (26+)

The full range of our specialist areas — eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, PTSD, perinatal mental health, and longstanding patterns.

Families & Parents

Parents are often the most powerful agent of change — through SPACE, PMT, and FBT we coach and equip the people around a patient, so a child can improve even before they are ready to engage themselves.

Complex & Treatment-Resistant

Patients who have tried multiple approaches without adequate relief — including intensive formats for the most complex presentations.
