Conditions We Treat in Austin

Specialty care for what we treat best.

Every condition we treat is available to Austin patients by telehealth with the specialist who fits, and for families in Family-Based Treatment, Nina Jolly is here in person for the parents doing the work at the table.

How Care Is Delivered

How care reaches Austin families.

In Person in Austin: Caregiver Peer Mentorship

Individual coaching with Nina Jolly for parents and partners doing the hardest work of eating disorder recovery: FBT-anchored, lived-experience-informed, and coordinated hand in hand with your clinical team. She has sat where you are sitting, and her mentorship is designed for parents actively in FBT with our clinicians.

Telehealth Across Texas

Secure video sessions with any member of our team: eating disorders, OCD and anxiety, trauma, perinatal mental health, and defiant behavior, matched to the specialist who fits. Texas is a PSYPACT state, so every licensed psychologist on the roster can see you, and the treatments do not change with the format. The research supports telehealth for the conditions we treat: outcomes are comparable to in-person care for most patients.

Virtual Intensives, Anywhere in Texas

Concentrated eating disorder intensives and OCD and anxiety intensives by telehealth: several sessions across a week, or an extended session in a single day, billed at each clinician's standard session rate, the same as weekly therapy. Your clinician stays live on video through the meal, or while you take the phone into the situation OCD has been avoiding. This is the intensive format for Austin families.

In Person in Houston, by Arrangement

Drs. Kaitlin Hill and Kimberly Osborn, both licensed in Texas, see patients in person in Houston. Austin families can pair telehealth with in-person visits there, or travel for a concentrated block of in-person work when weekly sessions are not enough.

Family-Based Treatment for Adolescents

For adolescent eating disorders, parents are positioned as the primary agents of recovery. Our FBT-trained psychologists, among them Dr. Renée D. Rienecke, a study therapist on the NIMH-funded trials that established FBT, deliver it by telehealth across Texas, and Nina Jolly's mentorship runs alongside, in person in Austin, for the day-to-day work at the table.

Parents, Caregivers, and Young Children

SPACE for the parents of anxious children, Parent Management Training for oppositional and defiant behavior, and parent coaching throughout. Your child does not have to be willing for treatment to begin. With children and teens, treatment runs through the family, and we teach the family what to do at home.

If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, please call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), go to your nearest emergency room, or dial 911.

Why Austin Families Choose EBTI

A parent who has been there, and a team that covers the rest.

Eating disorder recovery doesn't happen primarily in a therapy room. It happens at the kitchen table, at the restaurant, at the family meal. The people sitting at that table with the patient often need support of their own, and that is what Nina Jolly provides in person in Austin. She helped her own child recover from anorexia through Family-Based Treatment, trained formally in FBT for caregivers, and completed advanced mentorship with JD Ouellette, one of the most respected lived-experience experts in the eating disorder field. Nina is not a licensed therapist, and she doesn't diagnose or give medical advice. What she offers is something clinical settings often lack: someone who has been in the chair beside yours, who knows what the work actually requires, and who is profoundly complementary to the treatment itself.

The treatment itself comes from the whole practice. The Evidence-Based Treatment Institute was founded by Drs. Zach and Allie Appenzeller to do one thing well: deliver the treatments the research supports, with fidelity, to families who have often already tried something that did not work. Their careers began in Houston, where Dr. Zach Appenzeller was Founding Director of the UTHealth Houston Center for Eating Disorders and Dr. Allie Appenzeller was Founding Director of the ARPA School Anxiety & School Refusal Program at Baylor College of Medicine, and both still hold Texas licenses. Every clinician on the team is a licensed psychologist with specialty training in eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, or the presentations that travel with them, and every one of them sees Texas patients by telehealth.

For Austin families, that means the approach academic medical centers point to, without the institutional friction: one specialist who carries the whole case, the rest of the team behind them, virtual intensives when weekly sessions are not enough, caregiver mentorship in Austin for the parents at the table, and a clinician who answers within one business day. Parents don't cause eating disorders, and families are not the problem to be managed. They are the most powerful resource a recovery has.

Austin FAQ

Questions families in Austin ask.

The Evidence-Based Treatment Institute (EBTI). EBTI's licensed psychologists see Austin patients by telehealth for eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, ARFID, and atypical anorexia), OCD, anxiety, trauma, perinatal mental health, and oppositional and defiant behavior, in children, adolescents, and adults; Texas is a PSYPACT state, so every clinician on the team is available to Texas patients. In person in Austin, Nina Jolly provides caregiver peer mentorship for parents whose child is in Family-Based Treatment. A clinician responds to every inquiry within one business day.

Yes. Every clinician on our team sees Texas patients by secure telehealth, through Texas licensure or PSYPACT, and the treatment does not change with the format: outcomes are comparable to in-person care for most patients. Tell us what is going on and we will match you with the right person.

Yes, as virtual intensives. Eating disorder intensives and OCD and anxiety intensives reach Austin families by telehealth: several sessions across a week, or an extended session in a single day, billed at each clinician's standard session rate, the same as weekly therapy. It is the same evidence-based treatment at a higher dose, with your clinician live on video through the meal or the exposure. Intensives delivered in the family's home run in South Florida, Houston, Denver, and Chicago.

We respond to every inquiry within one business day, and most Austin patients begin treatment within five to seven days of reaching out. Inquiries about intensives, particularly eating disorder intensives, are treated as urgent and typically answered within hours. The first step is a brief screening conversation through our Get Started page.

EBTI is a private-pay specialty practice, so our clinicians do not bill insurance directly. We provide superbills that families can submit to their insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement; PPO plans are most likely to offer meaningful out-of-network coverage. Session fees and the details are listed on our fees page.

Yes. We treat children, adolescents, and adults, and with young people the treatment runs through the family: Family-Based Treatment for adolescent eating disorders, SPACE for the parents of anxious children, Parent Management Training for oppositional and defiant behavior, and child-facing ERP for OCD from about age six, with SPACE through the parents when a child is not ready to take part. In Austin, Nina Jolly, a parent who guided her own child through FBT to recovery, meets caregivers in person alongside the clinical team.

Our OCD and anxiety specialists see Austin families by secure telehealth: Drs. Zach and Allie Appenzeller, Dr. Kaitlin Hill, Dr. Kimberly Osborn, and Dr. Eliza Lanzillo, all trained in Exposure and Response Prevention, with OCD and anxiety intensives by video at each clinician's standard session rate and, for families who want part of the work face to face, in person with Drs. Hill and Osborn in Houston. The same is true anywhere in Texas. Texas is a PSYPACT state, and our entire team sees Texas patients by telehealth: Drs. Zach Appenzeller, Allie Appenzeller, Renée Rienecke, Kimberly Osborn, Natalia Levy, Kaitlin Hill, and Eliza Lanzillo. Families in San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, or anywhere else in Texas can work with our team, including virtual intensives, without traveling to Austin or Houston. Nina Jolly's caregiver mentorship is available by video anywhere in the U.S.

It is one-to-one coaching for parents and partners supporting a loved one through eating disorder recovery, in person in Austin and by secure video anywhere in the U.S., at $175 per session, with longer sessions prorated. Nina is not a licensed therapist, and she doesn't diagnose or give medical advice. She is a parent who guided her own child through Family-Based Treatment to recovery, trained formally in FBT for caregivers, and works hand in hand with the clinical team; the mentorship is designed for parents actively engaged in FBT with our clinicians. Profoundly complementary to the treatment, and for some families the main person they lean on.
